Recognizing and treating glaucoma

According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, half of people affected by glaucoma do not even realize they have it. This is because, in the early stages of the disease, there are virtually no symptoms. In general, glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually cause people to go blind. While there is no cure at this time, regular visits to your eye doctor and medication or surgery can slow or prevent vision loss. That’s why it’s important to use your True Care eye care plan to find a great eye care practitioner and be vigilant about this serious condition.
While everyone is at risk for glaucoma, some groups of people are more at risk than others. The Glaucoma Research Foundation lists African Americans, people over the age of 60, older Hispanics, Asians, steroid users, and eye-injury patients as the most susceptible groups. Other people at risk include those who have family members with glaucoma, and people who have hypertension or diabetes. If you consider yourself a member of one of these groups, it’s important to get a complete eye exam, including eye dilation, every year or two. Look at your True Care benefit plan to find great discounts on an eye doctor who meets your needs.
